Requested by One flying fish with shapely clouds to order! Well, one shapely cloud. And it's not a REAL flying fish, obviously...more like a giant dragon-betta fish with a little rider dude. I had a really hard time getting the scales right at first, but I think they came out okay, if maybe a little too sticky-outy. I was gonna have some other fish/rider combos in the background, to show some different 'breeds' or whatevah, but it ended up looking cooler with just wide open sky. Anyway, I hope you like it, man!
Daily Deviation, 2006-12-04

Daily DeviationAn Ocean of the Sky by ~MaverickNinja777 is totally cool. Awesome concept with some really great details on all the shading of the scales and fins. Excellent use of the background to give this a scary feeling of elevation too. Just one question though, who has the unlucky job of taming these brutes? Lol, life's been here and there, but generally good. How's your schoolwork and all that been?

Pretty good; I think I actually learned something in my drawing class. But I'm definitely looking forward to the new quarter. =P

I can tell. Just oooneeee thing. :paranoid: How do you do your lines for your artwork? Do you do lineart or just color over the pencil?

I know I asked 'Flying Fish'.. but I scarcely expected something like this! To say that I stared at this deviation with my mouth working like a fish would be an understatement.. I love it!! Thank you

Ah, well, since you asked. =P My process is typically something like this: Do a sketch. If I can nail it down on my laptop, great, if not, I hit the real sketchbook and then scan it. This is kind of better, because then I have a great big file size to work with. Then I'll set that sketch to like 50% opacity and do another layer over the top of like 'refined lines'. If I'm picky i might even go over it AGAIN in a new layer. Then I put the finished outline on multiply, and do my colors in underneath it. If I decide i don't want all my outlines to be black, then you can lock the pixels on the layer and just color the lines only. I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but yeah. Hope something in there might be of use to you!
